Insights from MULTIMOLD: 1st gen prototype for injection molding in HMI and more

The process to revolutionise injection molding is moving. We gathered in Leoben (Austria) at Montanuniversität Leoben premises to discuss the progress of the 1st Gen prototypes from MULTIMOLD and the recyclability and debonding of plastic to make products circular-by-design

The MULTIMOLD mission is not an easy one. Still, it is certainly pivotal to boost innovation in the manufacturing sector and guarantee the production of complex products with an advanced injection molding process that leverages efficiency and revenues.

1st-GEN prototypes in the automotive sector

One year has passed and we marked it by joining together to present the progress achieved so far. Our industrial partners Nanogate and HTP presented the 1st generation of prototypes to enhance Human Machine Interface (HMI), developed in collaboration with Joanneum Research, MUL, IMEC and Standex.

Our goal is to overcome the challenges posed by injection molding technology as surface functionalities, electronic integration, tool fabrication, recycling, and process complexity.

The 1st Generation prototype will officially be presented in June 2025 to the EU Commission, but the first tests shown at our meeting have already given some positive results

The first deboning of plastic succeeded!

Thanks to the expertise of FhG-IVV and IMEC, MULTIMOLD is researching solutions to easily separate plastics for electronic devices and guarantee that injection molded products have high standards of recyclability and circularity throughout their lives. Solvents and dissolution conditions testing has made some progress, as well as the development of innovative injection techniques to guarantee the products are circular-by-design.

Life-cycle-Assessment and Digital Data management

MULTIMOLD is not only innovative from an industrial point of view, but it is also addressing the problem of efficiency and sustainability since the planning phase of a new industrial project.

The work of FhG-IZM on optimised Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Practices for emerging technologies is moving forward with the support of data from all partners involved in the 1st gen demonstrator.

At the same time, with the support of Syxis’ data management system, MULTIMOLD can ensure a smooth LCA development as well as move the first step towards a Digital Product Passport (DPP) as indicated in the ESPR - Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation approved by the EU Commission in April 2024.

Site visit of where the revolution happened

During our stay in Leoben, we had the chance to visit the laboratory of the Institute of Polymer Processing at Montanuniversität Leoben, where they were shown machinery from different eras that made the history of the manufacturing sector!
